International E-Waste Day 2025

14 October marks International E-Waste Day, an initiative by the WEEE Forum that raises global awareness about electronic waste and how responsible choices can help protect the planet.

At seoapp.es, we see classrooms as the starting point for change. By helping educational institutions adopt refurbished IT equipment through Total ReThink, we’re empowering students to understand how technology and sustainability can work hand in hand.

Why It Matters for Schools

Every year, more than 60 million tonnes of electronic waste are produced worldwide. Many devices that end up in storage or landfill could have been reused, repaired, or refurbished.

For schools, this topic offers an important learning opportunity. International E-Waste Day encourages students, teachers, and communities to think about the full lifecycle of technology — how it is made, used, and reused.

By understanding this, students learn that sustainability is not only about recycling but about making smarter, more thoughtful choices from the very beginning.

How Refurbished Computers Help

Refurbished computers give schools and students access to reliable technology at a fraction of the cost of new equipment. They are also an effective way to reduce environmental impact and demonstrate real-world sustainability in action.

Through Total ReThink, every refurbished laptop or desktop is carefully tested, upgraded, and restored to high standards. This process saves energy and resources while maintaining excellent quality and performance.

Refurbished devices help schools:

  • Reduce e-waste and conserve valuable materials
  • Cut carbon emissions by up to 95 per cent
  • Use zero new raw materials
  • Access affordable, high-quality IT equipment for learning

This allows schools to invest in more classroom technology while supporting real environmental progress.

Real Impact in Numbers

From Total ReThink’s 2024 results:

  • 32 million kilograms of CO₂ emissions saved, around 95 percent less CO₂ per device compared with manufacturing new
  • Over 190,000 litres of water saved per laptop
  • 100 per cent recyclable packaging
  • Up to 70 per cent cost savings for refurbished IT equipment

These numbers show how meaningful refurbished technology can be for both budgets and the planet.

The 2025 Focus: Critical Raw Materials

This year’s International E-Waste Day theme focuses on Critical Raw Materials — the valuable elements used in electronic devices that are becoming harder to source.

By reusing and refurbishing computers, schools can help reduce the need for new mining and protect the environment for future generations. It is a powerful message to share with students about how simple changes in daily choices can protect natural resources.

What Schools Can Do

There are many ways for schools to take part in International E-Waste Day 2025:

  • Start a classroom discussion about where electronics come from and what happens when they are thrown away.
  • Encourage students to repair, reuse, or donate old devices when possible.
  • Choose refurbished IT equipment through Total ReThink to reduce waste and save costs.
  • Organise a collection drive for unused electronics to ensure they are responsibly recycled.

Even small steps can create lasting change.

A Shared Commitment

At seoapp.es, we are proud to work with Total ReThink and the WEEE Forum to promote sustainability in education. Our goal is to help schools access the technology they need while protecting the planet that students will inherit.

Every refurbished laptop or desktop represents fewer emissions, less waste, and smarter use of existing resources.
